Jávea Go Top as CF Benidorm Drop to Second in Tight Grup Sud Promotion Race

CDF Jávea players and young fans celebrating at home

CF Benidorm have slipped to second place in the Lliga Comunitat FFCV Grup Sud after Saturday’s 1-1 draw away at CE Alberic Sucemart was followed by a victory for CDF Jávea on Sunday.

Jávea beat Benigànim 2-0 at home to move one point clear at the top with 18 points from eight matches. They have now won six league games and scored 20 goals, more than any other team in the division. Benigànim are also Benidorm’s next opponents.

Despite losing top spot, Sergio Mora’s side remain unbeaten, with five wins and two draws from their opening seven league fixtures. They have 17 points and a game in hand on Jávea following last weekend’s postponement of their home match against CD Olímpic due to adverse weather conditions.

Benidorm have also already beaten the new leaders this season, recording a 2-1 victory over Jávea at the Guillermo Amor on the opening weekend.

Alzira Close the Gap as Olímpic Drop Points

UD Alzira strengthened their position among the promotion contenders with an impressive 3-1 victory away at Novelda Unión.

The result takes Alzira to 16 points from seven matches, leaving them just two points behind leaders Jávea and one behind Benidorm.

CD Olímpic, another of the division’s unbeaten teams, were unable to take full advantage of Benidorm’s draw after being held to a goalless stalemate at home by struggling Santa Pola.

Olímpic remain fourth with 15 points from seven games, level on points with CD Thader, who secured an excellent 3-1 away victory over CD Almoradí.

Thader have played eight matches, however, while Olímpic have completed seven.

CE Alberic’s draw with Benidorm leaves them sixth with 14 points, meaning just four points separate the top six clubs.

Gandía Impress as Calpe and Tavernes Secure Important Wins

Elsewhere, CF Gandía produced the biggest victory of the weekend, defeating FB Redován 4-0 at home.

The result lifts Gandía to tenth place on eight points, while Redován remain seventh with 12 points despite their heavy defeat.

CFUD Calpe also enjoyed an excellent afternoon, winning 4-2 away at UD Rayo Ibense to move level on seven points with their opponents.

At the lower end of the table, CFUE Tavernes de la Valldigna claimed a valuable 3-2 victory away at CFI Alicante.

It was Tavernes’ second league win of the campaign, taking them to six points and moving them above Almoradí and Santa Pola.

Benigànim, meanwhile, remain 13th with seven points following their defeat at Jávea.

How the League Table Looks

Following the matches played in Jornada 8, the top six positions are:

Position Club Played Points
1 CDF Jávea 8 18
2 CF Benidorm 7 17
3 UD Alzira 7 16
4 CD Olímpic 7 15
5 CD Thader 8 15
6 CE Alberic 8 14

Benidorm and Olímpic remain the only two unbeaten teams in Grup Sud, while Jávea lead the standings with six victories from eight matches.

There is little separating the leading contenders, particularly with several clubs still having postponed fixtures to complete.

Plenty Still to Play For

Although Benidorm have slipped to second place, their position remains encouraging.

With 17 points from seven matches, they are just one point behind Jávea and have a game in hand on the leaders.

Alzira are also firmly in contention, while Olímpic’s unbeaten record and impressive defensive statistics, with only four goals conceded, underline their own promotion credentials.

The rearranged fixture between Benidorm and Olímpic could prove particularly significant, with both clubs looking to maintain their unbeaten starts and strengthen their positions.

Eight rounds into the campaign, the picture is becoming clearer, but the race at the top of Grup Sud remains wide open.
